I spent a lot of time in Saipan speaking with a Chamorro fisherman named Herman. He explained that the Chamorro's thought of the ocean as feminine, and that a fisherman had to take care when entering and leaving the ocean, and to make sure that he respected her while he was with her. The way to enter the ocean is always through the channels that are created by the watersheds. They make a channel through the reef and allow easy passage.

No problem :) actually no, not even close. I'm British and my "French Hawaiian" nickname was given to me by my uncle John after making me listen to a band featuring Arthur Guitar a.k.a. the "English Hawaiian" ;)

That's cool, I live in Hawai'i, so I thought that was a cool nicname. I'm not Hawaiian though, I'm Californian. Oddly enough though, I also have an Uncle John. I don't suppose yours is a John Turner?

That's pretty cool :) I've been to Calif once, the Hollywood area for a funeral. Despite the circumstances at the time I still admired the sweetness of the place. Different from here anyway! No, my uncle is John McCoy :D
